As public-sector communicators, we are often tasked with communicating complex topics to our communities. From annual agency-wide budgets to important capital improvement projects, we all know how important it is to present these topics in a way that is easy-to-understand, visually based, and – wait for it - tells a story. Stories better engage our residents and communities and build trust and confidence in our agency. In this session, we’ll offer some insights, tips and tools to using graphics and visuals to support your storytelling efforts…and perhaps make your life a little easier too.

Thomas Reeves as the top communications official for the 17th largest city in California, Thomas has direct leadership over Modesto’s public information, social media, community engagement, and marketing projects. Prior to city work, he worked as a lead public affairs liaison for the largest investor-owned utility in California and as head of the public affairs and community relations divisions for a regional passenger rail agency.
Thomas has a Master’s in Communication & Leadership Studies from Gonzaga University and a Bachelor’s in Communications from Simpson University. He is also an adjunct professor of Communications Studies at San Joaquin Delta College.
Kim Newcomer has 21 years’ experience in communications and marketing for communities, proven success blending traditional communication tools with progressive engagement techniques. She currently serves as the CEO/Founder of Slate Communications, a agency focused on helping public agencies connect with their communities. Prior to starting Slate, worked for the communities of Vail, Durango, and Fort Collins, CO.
She holds a Bachelor’s in Business Administration/Marketing from the University of Denver.This session qualifies for:
