My First Year with CAPIO
I’m Cameron Amano, and I’m a proud new member of CAPIO. Until last year, my entire professional journey unfolded in the private sector. Growing up, I developed a love for video creation, graphic design, and writing—passions that initially guided me toward a career in the entertainment industry, where I aspired to make a meaningful impact while doing what I loved.
In the entertainment industry, I worked for various TV shows, radio stations, and a record label. These experiences enriched my skills and taught me invaluable lessons. I learned the art of conducting interviews to elicit insightful responses and how to craft compelling stories on camera, focusing on visual storytelling and audience connection. I also became adept at project management, coordinating various elements to ensure smooth operations. These skills proved vital in a fast-paced environment where creativity and tight deadlines were the norm.
Last year marked a significant turning point in my career as I transitioned from the private sector to the public sector, accepting a position as a Communications Specialist with SBCERA. This leap was both exciting and intimidating. The initial adjustment was overwhelming, and the learning curve steep, as I navigated the complexities of a government pension—an area I previously knew little about. It felt like stepping into an entirely new world that demanded a different skill set and a deeper understanding of public service and community needs.
Fortunately, my journey was eased by the support of CAPIO. As a member for just over a year, I have found it to be an enriching experience filled with resources that have helped me adapt and thrive in my new role. From day one, I was welcomed into a community of dedicated professionals eager to share their knowledge and experiences.
In May, I had the honor of attending my first CAPIO conference. This event was a fantastic learning opportunity, featuring inspiring training sessions and valuable insights. It also provided a platform for my team, where we received an Award of Distinction for our Quick Tip Video Series and Life After Retirement Newsletter. This recognition validated our efforts to improve public communication for our members and underscored the importance of our work in the public sector. It was a proud moment for our team, providing a space for us to reflect on our dedication to enhancing the lives of those we serve.
Among the many resources CAPIO provides, I particularly value the access to seminars and webinars. These sessions have proven to be incredibly insightful, covering a variety of topics directly applicable to my work. For example, I learned tips on utilizing AI for graphic design, improving internal communication efforts, and navigating the ever-changing social media landscape. While sitting in these training sessions, I realized that the gap between the entertainment industry and working in the public sector was not as vast as I originally thought. The skills I acquired in the private sector could be used as significant advantages. CAPIO has equipped me with new tools and strategies that I’ve been able to implement in my role.
In September, I reached a significant milestone by earning my J. Lindsey Wolf Certificate in Communications. This achievement not only reflects my hard work but also emphasizes the supportive environment CAPIO fosters. In just one year, I have made remarkable strides as a public communicator, largely due to the resources, education, and networking opportunities provided by CAPIO.
Although I initially started out in a different industry, I now find deep fulfillment and joy in making an impact while pursuing my passion in the public sector. I am truly optimistic about the future and excited to continue growing as a public communicator for many years to come. A heartfelt thank you to CAPIO!
