Government Communicators Day

Post

Government Communicators Day, recognized each year on Feb. 20, is a chance for us to pause and recognize the professionals who keep the public informed, engaged and connected to the work of government. From emergency updates and public meetings to service updates, community events and major policy decisions, government communicators help translate complex issues into clear, useful information that can help people act and better understand their communities.

This year, CAPIO members marked the occasion with creativity and pride. Agencies across the state shared behind-the-scenes glimpses of their teams in action, spotlighted colleagues who work tirelessly, and leaned into trends to showcase the personality and purpose behind public service communications. Posts ranged from lighthearted reels and team photos to thoughtful reflections on why the work matters. LinkedIn feeds all over California were overflowing with government communicators.

In total, CAPIO had more than 50 tags on Instagram and LinkedIn. Members can check them out on CAPIO’s Instagram by selecting the Gov Comms Day 2026 Highlights button.

Beyond the social media engagement, the day served as a reminder of the essential role communicators play in building trust. In moments of crisis, we are often the steady voice providing clarity. In times of progress, we help celebrate milestones and explain how projects and programs enhance communities and help residents thrive. Every day, our work strengthens transparency and accountability.

As media landscapes continue to shift, the day is reminder of how meaningful our profession has become. Government communication is not simply about drafting a press release or managing a feed. It is about public service. It is about listening as much as speaking. And it is about ensuring communities have access to timely, accurate and accessible information.

Seeing the breadth of participation across CAPIO reinforces something many of us already know: government communicators are creative, collaborative and deeply committed to the communities we serve. Government Communicators Day offered a well-deserved moment to celebrate that shared mission.

  • City of Brea brought us back to their early days with a look at their fresh-faced future government communicators.
  • And the OC Sanitation District took us inside the Office – the Public Affairs Office – with a great video.
  • The Town of Danville showed us how PIOs keep things spinning.
  • The County of Riverside unpacked the day with an entertaining Booster Pack.

And not to be outdone, by their neighbors, the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office introduced us to their team sitcom-style.
