CAPIO’s Mentor Program Builds Connections Across Generations
CAPIO’s Mentor Program continues to inspire communicators at
every career stage—creating connections that strengthen the
public information profession statewide. Through the program,
seasoned professionals share their knowledge and experience while
new leaders bring fresh energy and ideas to the table.
For Key Budge, Community Engagement Director for the City of
Tehachapi, mentorship is about giving back:
“If I can be of some help to a new young communicator in this sector, I am more than happy to share my 30-plus years of government experience. As an old-timer, I still have some institutional knowledge to pass down!”
Kevin Strauss, Communications Manager for Santa Clarita Valley Water, a past mentee turned mentor, says the program has expanded his professional network and shaped his leadership style:
“When I first started in the program, my mentor was someone I’d never spoken to. Now, I know I can reach out anytime for an honest perspective. It’s not a one-way flow of information—mentors learn, too.”
Vania Pocasangre, Communications Specialist for the City of Lynwood, joined the program to strengthen her skills and gain guidance in public sector communications:
“My goal was to strengthen my strategic communication skills, gain guidance on how to navigate challenges that come with public service, and learn how to better communicate the value of our work to management. One of the most meaningful parts of the program was being able to connect with my mentor and openly discuss real-world communication challenges. His guidance not only shaped how I approach my work and my role within the City but also inspired me to continue my education—I am now pursuing my Master of Public Administration.”
For Lorraine Garcia, Communications Manager and Public Information Officer for the Coachella Valley Water District, the experience has been a meaningful way to give back:
“I will always be thankful to my mentors and everyone who has supported me and played a significant role in my success. After 20 years of experience, I wanted to give back and support those striving to reach the next level in their careers. I was truly proud when my mentee told me they’d been promoted and thanked me. They did all the hard work—I was just happy to be there to support and guide them.”
Ashley Metzger, Chief Growth Officer of Regional Government Services, shared how the experience has deepened both professional and personal growth:
“CAPIO’s program has helped me be a better team member and leader. Being a mentee was very helpful to me in a time of change, so I wanted to participate again. This year, being a mentor has helped me be more intentional about supporting others in their blossoming careers—it’s directly transferable to how I lead my team.”
For Scott Sear of the Desert Recreation District, the value lies in mutual growth and encouragement:
“Sometimes all someone needs is a reminder that they’re on the right path. Watching that confidence grow was incredible. CAPIO’s Mentor Program connects people who want to grow, share ideas, and lift each other up.”
Whether you’re looking to learn from experienced communicators or give back to the next generation, CAPIO’s Mentor Program is the perfect way to grow your network, your skills, and your impact.
